Phillipsburg, NJ - A growing rivalry between two Phillipsburg parenting organizations may finally be settled on the football field after A.C.T.I.V.E., or Adults Committed To Involvement, Values & Example, challenged the controversial parenting group P.A.J.A.M.A., or Phillipsburg Association of Judgmental Adults Monitoring Absolutely Everything, to a Thanksgiving Day flag football game.

The proposed matchup, already being called the “Thanksgiving Throwdown,” would pit two organizations with dramatically different philosophies against one another in what could become the most anticipated local sporting event involving adults who haven’t exercised since high school.

A.C.T.I.V.E., whose members advocate parental involvement, positive role models, and teaching children respect, issued the challenge after growing frustrated with P.A.J.A.M.A.’s reliance on Facebook complaints to address virtually every problem facing Phillipsburg families.

“We’ve spent months watching these people complain that there’s nothing for their kids to do,” said A.C.T.I.V.E. spokesperson Kelli Pleasant, a mother of three who coaches youth sports, volunteers at school functions, and reportedly knows all her children’s teachers by name.

“So we figured we’d give them something to do. It’s free, it’s outdoors, and they can bring their kids. We’re even supplying the flags. All they have to do is show up.”

Pleasant said the event would demonstrate that families can enjoy themselves without demanding the municipality organize, supervise, fund, and clean up afterward.

The challenge, however, was not warmly received.

P.A.J.A.M.A. representative Tammy, who requested that her last name be withheld until she could determine whether Pleasant’s statement constituted harassment, immediately questioned the proposal’s fairness.

“First of all, Thanksgiving is a family holiday,” Tammy explained. “Some of us have traditions. We have food to prepare, relatives to complain about, and several Facebook groups that aren’t going to moderate themselves.”

Tammy also questioned A.C.T.I.V.E.’s competitive advantage.

“These people are always outside doing something. Coaching, hiking, riding bicycles. How is that supposed to be a fair game? Some of our members haven’t run since the last Walmart Black Friday sale. My husband can’t even play. He’s on disability, and if the state sees him running around catching footballs, they’ll probably disqualify him.”

According to Pleasant, A.C.T.I.V.E. has proposed a friendly, noncontact competition with mixed teams of mothers and fathers, volunteer referees, and children cheering from the sidelines.

“We’re not trying to embarrass anybody,” Pleasant said. “We just want parents to get together, have fun, and demonstrate good sportsmanship in front of their children.”

P.A.J.A.M.A. immediately accused A.C.T.I.V.E. of creating an emotionally hostile environment by suggesting its members might benefit from physical activity.

Within hours, P.A.J.A.M.A. had reportedly established a Facebook committee to investigate the challenge, dispute the rules, question the referees, and determine whether flag pulling could be considered bullying.

A separate committee was formed to discuss postponing the game due to the possibility of cold weather.

Meanwhile, A.C.T.I.V.E. members have begun organizing volunteers, preparing refreshments, and encouraging parents to practice passing footballs with their children.

P.A.J.A.M.A. members spent much of the afternoon researching Pleasant’s Facebook history for potentially offensive comments dating back to 2014.

Despite the tension, Pleasant remains optimistic.

“Look, nobody has to be a great athlete. Nobody even has to win. We’re trying to teach our children that you can disagree with someone, shake their hand, and still treat them with respect.”

Tammy disagreed.

“That’s easy for her to say. She hasn’t even explained who’s paying for the participation trophies.”

The game is being proposed for Thursday, November 26, at 8:00 a.m. at Walter’s Park in Phillipsburg.

A.C.T.I.V.E. officials say they’re ready once P.A.J.A.M.A. accepts the challenge.

P.A.J.A.M.A., meanwhile, has demanded a public meeting, a written apology, three independent referees, free transportation, and confirmation that nobody will be required to run.

Asked whether she personally intended to participate, Tammy offered a firm response.

“Absolutely. I’ll be there supporting our team.”

When asked whether she meant on the field, Tammy clarified:

“Don’t be ridiculous. Somebody has to livestream the bullying.”
